At CMH graduate nurses working in the Mental Health sector have the opportunity to work in diverse areas, across the age continuum, as well as with culturally specific and geographically aligned services. With acute treatment options, connecting with the communities we work alongside and building relationships with people across the CM Health region, we contribute to improving outcomes for the people we work with. Graduate nurses in this area are supported in placement by having an allocated preceptor for each of the 2 different rotations as well as a Clinical Coach to provide guidance around clinical practice. They also attend a minimum of 20 hours of Professional Supervision.
Post Graduate Study
The NESP graduates are required to complete a full Post Graduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Mental Health Nursing) Entry to Specialty Practice. This PG Cert is run by the University of Auckland and comprises of two 30 point papers. Requirements of this programme include attendance at University for 8 days per semester and 20 hours of Professional Supervision as well as successful completion of the study programme and employment at CMH. Preceptorship is also a fundamental part of this programme.
Two placement opportunities across acute services and community services
Graduates have two different placements during their year, one being acute services (including inpatient placements) and one a community placement, this could be within child and youth services, older persons or adult services.

- Rehabilitation and Recovery Services, Inpatient
- Services for Older Persons inpatient and community
- Adult Acute Inpatient services
- Intensive Care Team
- Early Psychosis Intervention Team

- Faleola and Te Puna Waiora
- Psychological Medicine
- Home Based Treatment
- Maternal Mental Health
- Child and Youth Services
- Eating Disorders
- Youth Forensic team
Recruitment Process
CMH employ graduate nurses through the ACE (Advanced Choice of employment) National Recruitment Process
Assessment Centre
Applicants are invited to attend a small group interview which comprises of 4 components:
- Formal Interview
- Written assessment
- Verbal Exemplar
- Scenario roll play
This process allows applicants the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and abilities in a variety of ways.
