Counties Manukau Health can offer anaesthetic technicians an extremely varied clinical experience and scope. The technicians work across two hospitals (Middlemore and Manukau Surgery Centre) and experience the great teamwork in the hospitals’ acute and elective surgical operating theatres.
Our theatres are modern and equipped with the latest anaesthetic equipment. Our new operating theatres at Middlemore Hospital opened in 2014 and have a light, airy feel with many windows and staff areas to interact with colleagues.
Counties Manukau Health provides a wide range of specialist secondary services, and a number of niche specialist tertiary services The National Burns Unit take major burns from all over NZ and the Pacific: Middlemore Hospital Orthopaedic Service is the Spinal Cord Injury Provider for all patients who have spinal cord injuries in the top half of the North Island. We have wonderful specialist services and multidisciplinary teams that are both friendly and supportive and extremely passionate about the work they do ensuring that high standards of care are given to all patients in our care.
Counties’ surgical specialities include Plastic, Hands & Reconstructive, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, General & Vascular Surgery, ORL, Urology and Ophthalmology and the National Burns Unit. Additionally our anaesthetic technicians work in remote anaesthesia in the Radiology Suite and play an important role in assisting with emergency airway procedures both within and externally from the operating theatres. As an anaesthetic technician you will be exposed to major surgery such as major trauma, major burns, and other complex, high risk surgery (including obstetrics) providing stimulation, continuous learning and great work stories.
As a major training hospital, we are proud to value the great teamwork and support for anaesthetic technician trainees and multidisciplinary students through our Clinical Educator team and Dedicated Education Unit. Ongoing Learning and Development is actively encouraged at Counties and there are regular opportunities to participate in specialty as well as multidisciplinary education. At Counties, you will also have access to many free educational and personal growth opportunities through Ko Awatea. This educational and research centre is aimed at transforming the health system to achieve excellent healthcare in the 21st century Ko Awatea leads and supports healthcare transformation using a collaborative approach to encourage innovation, quality improvement and knowledge transfer. Ko Awatea is also a centre of education dedicated to meeting the needs of students, CM Health staff and visitors through education, leadership and professional development. The anaesthetic technician team is encouraged to participate in these educational activities as professional development is a priority for our staff.
Counties also lead the way in supporting professionalism by having NZ’s first Professional Leader position (established in 2014). Our Professional Leader can offer professional advice, coaching and financial support to assist Registered Anaesthetic Technicians in achieving their MSC regulatory requirements and improving their professional profile. To enable this, additional educational funding of up to $6000 is available, all within a supportive and professional working environment.

People ask me what I love about my job, but that is such a difficult question to answer only because there are multiple reasons why I love what I do. To begin with, I enjoy helping patients in any way I possibly can. I enjoy giving direct support to my Charge in a way that makes a difference. The contribution I make enables my Charge to utilise their time more efficiently on more important tasks.
An example would be that from time to time I help out with interpreting for non- English speaking Tongan patients so that their operation does not get delayed due to interpreter not being available. Not only do I help talk to the patient, but I also make them feel safe and comfortable as much as I can.
I have learned that working here at CM Health gives you the opportunity to meet both patients and staff from wide cultural diversity. I have learnt so much about other cultural backgrounds; it is important for me to know about other cultural values because from there I can perform my role accordingly by upholding and respecting their beliefs and values.
I have been in CM Health for 11 years, and it always amazes me how we always strive to deliver a high standard of healthcare to our patients and also the support service the organisation provides for the staff.
