Compassion / Excellence / Cohesion

An anaesthetic technician is a core member of the anaesthetic care team, working collaboratively with health professionals to provide safe and optimal patient care.  The anaesthetic technician team at Counties Manukau Health provides  clinical and technical support to our anaesthetists in a professional relationship that is longstanding, and integral to the safety of anaesthetic practice.  Utilising sound technical and clinical judgement we provide patient care and assistance throughout all aspects of perioperative, interventional, and investigative procedures requiring anaesthesia.

Our anaesthetic technicians also work collaboratively with a wide range of other speciality groups outside of the perioperative field: infection prevention and control experts, surgical specialists, intensive care specialist groups, radiology teams, biomedical engineers, pharmacy and procurement teams, all striving to optimise the patient journey.

Opportunities exist for our registered staff to develop skills in a wide range of elective and acute clinical specialities including: radiology, burns, obstetrics, orthopaedics, paediatrics, plastics and reconstructive, general, bariatric, colorectal, vascular and renal, gynecology, maxillofacial, otorhinology, opthalmology, cell salvage, point-of-care testing, simulation, regional and general anaesthesia techniques utilising ultrasound technology.

The career development of anaesthetic technicians is something we take great pride in, with all registered staff being given the opportunity to develop their skills in education and management if this is a path of interest, as part of our succession planning.  The registered anaesthetic technicians are supported by a charge anaesthetic technician and two associate clinical charge technicians that oversee the day-to-day coordination of all technicians across each theatre suite.  As a major teaching hospital, we have a cohesive and excellent team of five clinical coaches, led by an educator/professional lead, the first appointment of this kind nationally.

Each year we seek to recruit for credentialled positions to join our 2-3 year training programme.  For more information please contact Steph Lewis via our contact page.
