Led by Dr. John McGann, our department has over 80 specialist anaesthetists in both fixed term and permanent positions, with representation from all around the globe.
As a teaching hospital, we are dedicated to our role as educators and hold ANZCA accreditation for our training positions. We have 20 registrars and up to 8 senior house officer positions with oversight by the local Northern Regional Training Programme. Our fellowship programme is overseen by skilled and dedicated consultants passionate about their area of expertise. See fellowship programmes.
We have a close working relationship with our managerial, nursing and anaesthetic technician colleagues who are all experts in their fields.
Our administrative support team are friendly, experienced, and happy to field questions about our department to the appropriate individual. For general enquiries click here.
What makes working within our Department unique:
The southernmost of Auckland's three main public hospitals, we provide care for over 550,000 local residents. We have a particular emphasis on the health of Maaori and Pacific communities and our shared vision is to work in partnership with our communities to improve the health status of all.
Middlemore has over 2,000 beds with 24 operating theatres over two sites, including an elective only surgical centre. We cover all surgical specialities except cardiothoracic, liver, transplant and neurosurgery. We are a tertiary referral centre for obstetrics, acute spine, plastics, pelvic trauma and reimplantation, mangled limb and reconstructive surgery. Middlemore hosts the National Burns Centre, providing burns medical and surgical care for New Zealand, the Pacific and Tahiti.
